This will be my second time hosting the Somerville Songwriter Sessions at Arts Armory Cafe in Somerville. What a great gig this is … I get to invite some of my favorite musicians and friends to share the night with me. I couldn’t be more delighted to present two of the very best local songwriters – Geoff Bartley & Mark Whitaker.
Geoff Bartley is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet – hands down, he’s that good! I just have to shake my head and smile whenever I get to see him play. Robert Johnson may have made a deal with the devil, but Mr. Bartley just plays the devil out of whatever he picks up. And he’s a stellar songwriter with more than 15 CDs in his catalog. But perhaps the greatest aspect of Geoff Bartley is his dedication to the local folk and bluegrass scene – hosting the folk open mic and bluegrass pickin’ party at the Cantab Lounge for over 25 years!
Mark Whitaker is a young local banjo phenom who I recently met at the annual Lizard Lounge Open Mic Challenge Big Event. This guy just blew me away with his soulful vocals and understated, tasty banjo supporting great lyrics and beautiful melodies. Roll that all up into one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and you’ve got Mark Whitaker.
I can’t wait to share the stage with these guys. It’s gonna be a good one!
This song is dedicated to the families and loved ones of the 9 brave souls at Mother Emanuel Church who lost their lives and to the open hearted congregation who welcomed in a misguided, troubled and hate-filled young man.
Please download and share this song far and wide. If you are moved to do so, and I hope you are, please consider contributing what you can.
All proceeds collected through downloads will be donated to the Lowcountry Ministries – Reverend Pinckney Fund an Initiative of the Palmetto Project and the City of Charleston. Or you can donate to them directly through the link above. Either way, I hope you will be moved to act!
A HUGE thank you to Doug Kwartler at Hollow Body Studios for producing, engineering and performing (everything but the acoustic guitar is Doug!). And special thanks to Vance Gilbert for helping to edit to this song to the bone.
To celebrate the full onslaught of Spring finally coming to New England, we’re hitting the road with a mini-tour of New England! I’m packing my buddy John Sonntag and lovely wife Esther Friedman into the Subaru and we’re off to New Hampshire, Western Mass and Boston!
First stop will be the Sunapee Community Coffeehouse in Sunapee NH. This great listening room began presenting concerts back in 2004 and is an all volunteer operation. I’m very excited to play in the region where I built my guitar with master luthier Alan Carruth. John Sonntag will play a opening set then join me for mine. We kick things off at 7pm.
Next up on our tour – The Luthier’s Co-op in Easthampton MA. This will be the first time I’ve ventured to the western part of my great state to play. I’m really looking forward to what seems like will be a very cool venue. Who doesn’t love a place where you can shop for a guitar, drink a beer and listen to some great music. Hope a few of my western MA friends can make it out.
And finally we will head back home to the Boston area where we will play a songwriters in the round show to open up the night at The Burren Sunday Night Backroom Acoustic Music Series hosted by Tom Bianchi. Esther, John and I will trade orginal songs back and forth for an hour or so. He hit the stage at 8pm followed by an acoustic band at 9 and later on in the night Tom Bianchi takes the stage. A night not to be missed Boston peeps!
